Arctic Circle Trail

Greenland’s 160km (100mi) Arctic Circle Trail is one of the most remote official hiking trails in the world. From Kangerlussuaq near the Ice Sheet to Sisimiut on the coast, it is an opportunity to disconnect completely as you make your way through wild Arctic tundra.

Along the way, you will

  • Experience a variety of landscapes, from rolling hills through to steep mountains, and a huge number of lakes

  • Look out for musk oxen, reindeer, arctic fox, arctic hare, ptarmigan, and other birdlife

  • Explore part of the Aasivissuit-Nipisat UNESCO World Heritage site – a protected Inuit hunting route that has been use for more than 4,500 years

  • Learn about the different plants and how the Inuit used them

  • Learn about life in Greenland and Inuit mythology

The hike is a challenging one that will test you physically and mentally.

We will take 10 days to hike between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut during which time you must carry everything you need for the duration of the trek (there is no re-supply option).  Most hikers usually start with about 20kg which includes their tent, sleeping system, and enough food for 11 days.

We follow Leave No Trace principles, so you must be prepared to carry all your trash (including used toilet paper) out with you.

What we recommend

We recommend that you have previous multi-day hiking experience, where you have carried your own equipment before signing up for the trip, and encourage you to train before your hike to get used to the weight, improve your ankle support, and work on your balance on very narrow tracks.

Feel free to contact us if you’d like to know more about the trip or have any questions. I look forward to showing you my homeland.
